Excursion Tips in Saarbrücken and the Surroundings
If you plan to use your stay in Saarbrücken to get to know the city and/or the Saarland better, you will find attractive excursion destinations in the immediate and wider vicinity. Bärbel Metzinger, an employee at the DeGEval office and a true native of Saarland, has a few tips for you:
UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte
Experience the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte. Just a 7-minute train ride from Saarbrücken Central Station, this exciting and fascinating place awaits you, where past, present, and future come together in a variety of ways. The Völklinger Hütte is the world's only fully preserved ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation, and is also the first industrial monument of this era to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Villeroy & Boch World
Another highlight in Saarland is the Villeroy & Boch World in the Old Abbey in Mettlach (about 30 minutes by train/70 kilometers from Saarbrücken). Covering more than 2,000 m², fascinating room displays and exhibits about the Ceramics manufacturer await you, offering a unique glimpse behind the scenes of this traditional company.
Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve
Experience pure nature in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, which is protected by UNESCO. Located in the southeast of Saarland, on the border with France and Rhineland-Palatinate, the reserve covers an area of approximately 36,000 hectares and is characterized by forests, orchards, and floodplain landscapes. The reserve is about 50 minutes by regional train or 30 kilometers from Saarbrücken.
Saarland Thermal Spa
The Saarland Thermal Spa is the perfect place to relax. The two-story complex, featuring Moorish-Andalusian architecture, offers a thermal bath with outdoor pool, a modern sauna area, and a spa—perfect for a break from everyday life. The Saarland-Therme spa can be reached from Saarbrücken in about 50 minutes by bus/Saarbahn (line 1) and is 16 kilometers away.
Losheim Reservoir
The swimming lakes in Saarland are also worth a visit, especially the Losheim Reservoir. Covering an area of 31 hectares, it offers a wide range of leisure activities for young and old alike. The lake is 58 kilometers from Saarbrücken and, unfortunately, difficult to reach by public transport from here (travel time approx. 1.5 hours).

Saarpolygon
An impressive testament to the former coal mining industry in the Saar region is the Saarpolygon, a steel sculpture on the Ensdorf slag heap at a height of 150 meters in the district of Saarlouis, about 28 kilometers from Saarbrücken and accessible by regional train in about one hour.
